Illini Training Camp Schedule Announced
July 31, 2012
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- Led by new head coach Tim Beckman, the Fighting Illini football team will once again open its preseason practices at Camp Rantoul, located on the former Chanute Air Force Base in Rantoul, Ill. It marks the 13th year Illinois will hold part of its training camp in Rantoul, which is about 20 miles northeast of Champaign-Urbana.
Players will report to Rantoul on Aug. 5 and will hold eight practices there from Aug. 6-12. All practices held at Camp Rantoul will be open to the public. For the first three days of practice (Aug. 6-8), the team will be split into two groups, with one practicing in the morning and the other in the afternoon. This format allows the coaching staff to give more repetitions and individual instruction to each player with so many newcomers going through Illinois practices for the first time.
After the morning practice on Sunday, Aug. 12, the team will return to Champaign for Fan Appreciation Day at Memorial Stadium from 5-6 p.m. Fan Appreciation Day details will be coming soon. Starting Aug. 13, the Fighting Illini will continue the rest of training camp in Champaign, where all practices will be closed to the public.
Illini fans will be able to get full coverage of Camp Rantoul including highlights, interviews and behind-the-scenes footage at fightingillini.com and CoachBeckman.com, as well as on the Illini Football Twitter and Facebook pages.
The 2012 Fighting Illini, led by new head coach Tim Beckman, will play seven games on the new Memorial Stadium FieldTurf in 2012, starting with the season-opener against Western Michigan on Sept. 1. The Illini are coming off bowl victories in back-to-back seasons for the first time in school history after defeating UCLA, 20-14, in the 2011 Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl. Season and single-game tickets for the 2012 season are on sale now.
