Illini at Big Ten Media Days: Day 1
July 28, 2014
The Fighting Illini are in Chicago on Monday and Tuesday, kicking off the 2014 season the annual Big Ten Media Days and Kickoff Luncheon. Illinois is represented by head coach Tim Beckman and seniors Simon Cvijanovic, Jon Davis and Austin Teitsma.
The players started the day by shuttling between interview rooms to record comments for television partners ESPN, FOX and Big Ten Network. These are the snippets you often see before games or when one of those networks airs a feature and has players from different teams commenting on it.
Beckman opened his day with a press conference in front of a ballroom full of reporters. He began by offering his condolences to the family of former Illini offensive lineman Shawn Afryl before covering a number of topics. Watch the press conference above and read the full transcript below.
The four Illini then moved to a room where each man sat at a podium for 30 minutes, fielding questions from the media members who bounced around the room. Beckman and Davis sat down with Jack Arute and Phil Savage for Sirius/XM's College Football Nation show, then they all headed to radio row to spend time with a number of radio shows from around Big Ten country.
Following lunch, the players shed their suit coats and dress shirts, and changed into jerseys for a photo shoot with ESPN. These are the images that you often see as part of features or when the network goes to commercial after one of those players makes a big play.
Teitsma and Davis chatted with Adam Rittenberg and Brian Bennett from ESPN.com, while Beckman moved into the TV rotation, sitting down with ESPN, FOX, BTN and The Journey. All three players headed over to the studio of Campus Insiders and Beckman stayed at the Hilton Chicago, where he met with Rittenberg and Bennett before chatting with representatives from USA Football and the BTN's marketing group.
That concluded a whirlwind day where the Illini representatives spoke with dozens of local, regional and national media. They will be back at it Tuesday morning for the final media session before the Kickoff Luncheon begins at 11:30 a.m.
