CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The University of Illinois has formally announced plans and unveiled renderings for a new FieldTurf Revolution surface that will be installed at Memorial Stadium and the Irwin Indoor Practice Facility this summer. The project is already underway and will be completed in time for the 2012 football season, which begins Sept. 1 against Western Michigan.
The new turf will be green in color, with alternating shades every five yards. The center of the field will feature the Block I logo inside an outline of the state of Illinois, similar to the design at center court of the Assembly Hall floor. Also new is the addition of the Big Ten logo on each 25-yard line and the X marking the NCAA's new kickoff spot on the 35-yard line.
The end zones will continue to match the Illinois helmets with the slanted, underlined, white Illinois text outlined in blue on an orange background, while the team bench areas on each side will continue to be orange. The orange and blue outline on each 20-yard line also will be carried over from the previous design.
The FieldTurf Revolution fiber is the result of innovative science, engineering and technology that provides FieldTurf customers with a soft, strong fiber with extraordinary durability and longevity. More information on FieldTurf Revolution can be found here.
Memorial Stadium, which opened in 1923, had a grass playing surface until 1985, when AstroTurf was installed. The portion of it between the goal lines was replaced in the fall of 1989 after vandals burned a 40-yard swath in the middle of the field. In the summer of 2001, the AstroTurf field was replaced with AstroPlay, an artificial surface with a grass-like, polyethylene fiber matrix filled with special rubber granules. In 2008, Illinois switched from AstroPlay to a state-of-the-art FieldTurf monofilament system.
The 2012 Fighting Illini, led by new head coach Tim Beckman, will play seven games on the new FieldTurf in 2012, starting with the season-opener against Western Michigan on Sept. 1. The Illini are coming off bowl victories in back-to-back seasons for the first time in school history after defeating UCLA, 20-14, in the 2011 Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl. Season and single-game tickets for the 2012 season are on sale now.
Illinois Field, the home of the Illini baseball team, also has FieldTurf, which was installed in 2008.
