Ferguson Named to Doak Walker Award Watch List

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Illinois junior running back Josh Ferguson has been named to the preseason watch list for the 2014 Doak Walker Award, given annually to the top running back in major college football. Ferguson is one of eight Big Ten backs on the 53-player watch list.
Ferguson ranked second in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) in receiving yards by a running back in 2013, with 44.6 yards per game. He also was ninth in the Big Ten in all-purpose yards per game (112.6) and led the Fighting Illini in rushing yards (64.9 per game), rushing touchdowns (seven) and total touchdowns (11).
The Naperville, Ill., native also totaled 17 plays of 20-plus yards and ranked second on the Illinois squad in receptions (50) and receiving yards (535). He broke the UI single-season record for receiving yards by a running back and already ranks second in Illini history in career receiving yards by a running back with 800 in two-plus seasons.
Doak Walker Award semifinalists will be named on Nov. 18, with finalists announced on Nov. 24. The 2014 Doak Walker Award recipient will be announced live on The Home Depot College Football Awards on Dec. 11 on ESPN.
The Fighting Illini will again play seven home games in 2014, including three in the month of September and a Big Ten slate of Purdue, Minnesota, Iowa and Penn State at Memorial Stadium. This year marks the first season of East-West divisional play in the Big Ten Conference. Illinois is in the Big Ten West division along with Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, Northwestern, Purdue and Wisconsin.
