Illini End Week Three With Scrimmage

The Fighting Illini wrapped up their third week of spring drills with a 120-play scrimmage Saturday afternoon under the Memorial Stadium bubble. The Illini scrimmaged with the first-team offense squaring off against the first-team defense and the second units also facing each other. Illinois scored five touchdowns and one field goal in 20 offensive series, including a sensational three-touchdown day from running back Jameel Cook. Cook gained 94 yards on 17 carries with three touchdowns and a 49-yard run. Freshman receiver Greg Lewis from Matteson, Illinois continued to enjoy a fine spring with four catches for 80 yards and a 38-yard touchdown from quarterback Kurt Kittner on the scrimmage's final play.
Among the quarterbacks, Kittner hit 7-11 passes for 112 yards and one touchdown, senior Kirk Johnson completed 9-17 passes for 120 yards and redshirt freshman Walter Young completed 6-15 for 45 yards. In addition to Cook, redshirt freshman Quincy Washington from Champaign Centennial H.S., gained 34 yards on six carries, senior Steve Havard had 13 yards on six attempts and sophomore Rocky Harvey gained 12 yards rushing and 31 receiving. Senior Lenny Willis caught four passes for 33 yards and sophomore tight end Brian Hodges pulled in three passes for 67 yards. Junior defensive end Fred Wakefield was the defensive star of the day with four quarterback sacks for minus 17 yards. Tackle leaders including Mon Long with seven and Jason Eberhart and Johnny Rogers with six stops.
The Illini are scheduled to practice Monday, April 12 (3:45 p.m.), Wednesday, April 14 (3 p.m.) and Thursday, April 15 (3:45 p.m.) in preparation for next Saturday's annual Orange and Blue Spring Game at 2 p.m. in Memorial Stadium.
