    Workmen are busy at Memorial Stadium replacing the Astro-Turf field with a
    new Astro-Play surface. The turquoise material that is showing in the
    endzones is the underlayment pad. Astro-Play, which was installed last year
    inside the new Irwin Indoor Practice Facility is a much softer surface than
    Astro-Turf, and plays more like grass.

    		 Installation is a very labor-intensive effort. Every white marking on the
    field is actually inlaid white Astro-Play material--all lines, all hash
    marks and all numbers.

    		 The new field in the stadium should be completed by mid-July. There are
    tentative plans in several years to peel back the new playing surface and
    lower the level of the playing field by perhaps five or six feet, thereby
    improving sight lines for fans, particularly those in the lowest rows of the
    main stands.
