CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Illinois senior linebacker Jonathan Brown already has collected a pair of preseason honors for 2013. The senior has been named a first-team All-Big Ten selection by Phil Steele and is on the watch list for the College Football Performance Awards Linebacker Trophy watch list.
Brown was a Butkus Award semifinalist and honorable mention All-Big Ten selection in 2012 despite missing the final three games of the season with a shoulder injury and missing significant portions of four other games due to injury. Brown was leading the Illini with 59 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks before having his season cut short.
Brown had a breakout 2011 season, earning All-Big Ten honors with 108 tackles, 19.5 tackles for loss and six sacks. He ranked sixth in the nation in TFLs per game (1.63) and led the Big Ten in TFLs per game during conference play (2.07).
In addition to Brown, two other Illini were recognized on the Phil Steele's preseason All-Big Ten teams. Junior punter Justin DuVernois was a second-team selection and sophomore linebacker Mason Monheim was named to the fourth team. DuVernois ranked fourth in the Big Ten in punting in 2012 with a 41.9 yards per punt average, including 15 punts of 50+ yards, while Monheim led the Fighting Illini with 86 tackles and added six TFLs and 1.5 sacks in 2012 to earn Freshman All-America honors.
