CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- Following a very successful spring football season, Illinois head football coach Ron Turner announced the final depth chart heading into fall drills at Camp Rantoul on August 11.

The Illinois offense returns 10 starters from last season's school record scoring squad. Back at the helm of the Illini offense is quarterback Kurt Kittner. Most of the offensive positions will be filled with returning starters, but there is competition for the role of split end. After three weeks of spring practice sophomores Walter Young and Aaron Moorehead and redshirt-freshman Eric McGoey are in a tight race for the starting spot.

With seven starters lost on the defensive side of the ball, the Illini had competition for two defensive linemen, two linebackers, two cornerbacks and one safety. Emerging as a solid defensive backfield in addition to returning free safety Muhammad Abdullah will be strong safety Bobby Jackson and cornerbacks Trayvon Waller and Eugene Wilson.

Sophomore linebacker Jerry Schumacher pushed for the starting spot at one of the linebacker positions and will battle senior Mon Long in the fall. Robert Franklin looks to fill the spot of middle linebacker to solidify the linebackers with returning starter Michael Young. Senior Karleton Thomas moved from defensive tackle to add depth and compete for a starting role with Terrell Washington at defensive end. Seniors Jason Eberhart and Fred Wakefield will look to hold the starting spots for defensive tackle and end, respectively, while two-year starter Brandon Moore will reclain his spot at the other tackle position.
