Offense Outscores Defense, 49-33, in Annual Spring Game
April 21, 2007 The Illinois Football team hosted its annual Orange and Blue Spring game this weekend with the offense topping the defense 49-33, using a special scoring system to award points to the defense. The offense, led by sophomore quarterback Isiah "Juice" Williams, scored four touchdowns on the day, while the defense forced two turnovers. The offense posted many big plays on the day, mostly coming from the passing combination of Williams and true-freshman Arrelious Benn. The pair connected on a 64-yard pass on the second play of the game, followed by a 31-yarder and 35-yard catch. Benn scored one of the team's four touchdowns, on a 30-yard touchdown run. Benn averaged 29 yards per catch on the day, recording five receptions for 145 yards. On the ground, junior Walter Mendenhall accounted for two more scores with his 10-yard run and 45-yard catch in the first quarter. For the day, he led the team in rushing on seven carries for 48 yards. The fourth touchdown for the offense, and the only one in the second half, came on an eight-yard run by Williams on the last play of the game. He finished the scrimmage hitting over 60 percent of his passes on 14-of-23 passing for 301 yards, while also rushing for 20 yards. Defensively, the Illini were sparked by interceptions by safety Kevin Mitchell and cornerback Chris Duvalt. Duvalt's athletic grab resulted in an 86-yard return for a touchdown. Sophomores Vontae Davis and Doug Pilcher both blocked kicks on special teams, earning points for the defense. For the day, the defense was stifling recording 12 tackles for loss and six sacks. Redshirt freshman defensive end Jerry Brown had 2.5 TFL, 1.5 sacks, along with his four tackles. Corner Antonio Gully led the team with six tackles, including one for loss. The Orange and Blue scrimmage ended Illinois' 15-practice spring season. The Illini soon begin the summer conditioning phase of the year, but return to pads in August when the team travels to Rantoul for training camp. The Illini open the season with Missouri in St. Louis at the Edward Jones Dome on Sat., Sept. 1.
The Juice Williams-to-Arrelious Benn connection was very effective Saturday. Benn had five catches for 145 yards in the Spring Game.
