After four weeks of spring practices, the Fighting Illini football team took the field for the 2008 Spring Game scrimmage in front of 12,531 faithful Illini fans. On the jam-packed east side of Memorial Stadium, fans got a preview of the play they can anticipate from the Illini in the upcoming season. The Illini offense came out ahead of the defense today with a final score of 38- 31.

The main offensive production came out of the passing game. Three Illini quarterbacks took snaps today. Juice Williams put the ball in the air the most completing 17-of-31 passes for 210 yards. Eddie McGee was successful on 8-of-14 attempts for 127 yards and the only touchdown of the day, a 54-yard touchdown pass to Brian Gamble in the second quarter. The gunslingers completed 26 balls all together to 10 separate Illini receivers racking up 354 yards.

Receivers Alex Reavy, Chris Duvalt, Chris James, and Jarred Fayson all had four catches today, Gamble pulled in three balls, Tom Sullivan and Greg McClendon both grabbed two and Jason McGoey, C.J. Jackson, and Daniel Dufrene all snagged one pass a piece.

The Illini rushing defense was stifling today racking up 15 tackles for losses and registering 10 sacks. Sophomore safety Bo Flowers led the team with 5.5 tackles today, but it was defensive ends Jerry Brown and Will Davis put on a performance with Brown recording three sacks and Davis with 2.5.

The special teams showed flashes of brilliance this afternoon. On the opening kickoff of the second half Fayson returned the kick 93 yards for a touchdown. Punter Jared Bosch averaged 46.5 yards on two punts dropping one on the 6-yard line, while Anthony Santella boomed two more punts for a 49-yard average and a touchback.

The Illini now prepare for summer conditioning before Camp Rantoul begins in August. The next time fans can see the Fighting Illini football team in action is on August 30 in St. Louis for the State Farm Arch Rivalry Game against a preseason top-5 Missouri team.

Coach Ron Zook...
"Well, it wasn't as nice as it was last year, but it wasn't as cold as it was the first spring game I was here. We got out of it all right. We got through it without any major injuries. I think that it's hard. A game is a game, and when you can't fully play offensive or defense, it isn't easy. I think that I can safely say that I don't believe any team is ready to play their first football game yet. Overall, I think that it was a very productive spring that will pay off for us in the fall."

...on Chris Duvalt:
"Chris has definitely improved. He has taken on a new life. He's always in the film room watching the film and putting in the work that it takes to make him a better ball player. He will do a big part in helping in our success in the future."

...on the passing game:
"As I said on Tuesday, our passing game is better. I think that Juice missed some balls that he should have hit, but he has hit those balls. If he's done it once, he'll do it again. We're getting there. We've made a lot of progress, but we've still got a ways to go."

...on the offensive line:
"We've still got a lot of work to do. If you look back a year ago, we are light-years ahead of where we were. I really feel that those seven guys that came in for us this spring from high school were a home run. Now how much are they going to play for us come fall, I'm not quite sure yet. We're making progress, and we will get there."

...on practices since the Rose Bowl:
"Patience is not my strongest quality. Which is why we push so hard. We know that we can be a top football team, and 33 practices later, we are 33 practices better than after the Bowl game. I'm starting to see the leaders showing themselves. I think that the senior class feels the pressure. When they came in, we weren't a great football team. So I'm sure that they want to make sure that things don't change for the worse now that we've had some success. They don't want things to change as their class comes through for their final season."

...on the kicking game:
"I think that after today it's wide open. I just have a good feeling, and I don't know why, but I think that we'll be fine when it comes to our kicking situations. I think we had a good showing in all three phases today."

DL Antonio James...

...on his touchdown:
"The ball popped loose, a couple guys touched it and it kind of bounced into my hand. I just ran. I was thinking about celebrating the whole time I was running, I really wasn't thinking about running hard."

...on the level of intensity at the spring game:
"We have a lot of competition around here, so we always play hard against each other in all of our little scrimmages."

...on the offense dominating:
"We have a very strong offense and we have a very strong defense. Some days they get the best of us and some days we get the best of them. They just came out more prepared than we did."

...on TE Tom Sullivan:
"I think Tom Sullivan has been ready for a couple years, and they just haven't really found a spot for him. Now I think there will be times when Tom can help us in games. He's got great hands and he's always been kind of terrorizing us on the scout team, and I think he's going to do a great job for us this year."

...on having expectations this year:
"We look forward to competing every day and I think we know how to. I think at this time last year we were still kind of in question. We hadn't won games - four games in the two years that I had been here - so there were still a lot of questions in the air. We knew we were competing and we knew we had talent and had a chance. But winning games is always tough, especially in the Big Ten and the competition we play. This year we know we can compete and we know what we have to do to win games so we're trying to retrace our steps like we did last year and add on to it."

...on what improvements need to be made:
"I think we have to be coachable. The kind of defense that we'll be running next year is something that suits our talent level well. I think that the offense does a great job, and Juice is getting a lot better every day. When they get healthy they're going to be pretty touch. Competing against those guys in camp is going to be a lot of fun."

...on his play:
"It's a good feeling to have spring ball culminate with this game and to have a good day. I'm happy with my performance today. It's a good feeling to have all of the hard work pay off. The punting job is open right now. The main thing Coach hits on is that it's about consistency, and right now somebody has to step up and be consistent."

On the play of the offense:
"We did some pretty good things as far as moving the ball up and down the field. Obviously there are some things to clean up, but that's why we go to practices and why we go to camp."

...on the difference in spring practices from last year to this year:
"It's a lot different. This year I know exactly what I need to work on. Last year I was still young and I didn't really know the drills to do, but now I have a good grasp on what I need to do. We all have a better understanding of what we need to do. We have some young guys here but we have the older guys taking control and leading those guys in the right direction."

"I always want to take the red jersey off. But it gives me a chance to just sit back in the pocket and throw. It all works out for the better."
