Defense Takes Advantage of Turnovers, Offense Scores 28 Points in 2003 Spring Scrimmage

Beutjer completed 14 passes for 106 yards and one TD in the spring scrimmage, Saturday at Memorial Stadium.

The Illinois offense scored four touchdowns, while the defense forced four turnovers in the 2003 Spring Scrimmage, Saturday afternoon at Memorial Stadium.
"It was great to see the defense flying around to the ball and forcing turnovers. I said all spring I haven't seen our defense this aggressive in a long time," head football coach Ron Turner said. "I thought the offense did a good job of moving the ball, but killed themselves with penalties and turnovers. But they responded well and bounced back. Overall, I am really pleased with the spring. I feel the attitude was great and we practiced with a lot of enthusiasm and intensity."
The defense started out strong when safety Eric McGoey intercepted a tipped ball at the defensive 32 yardline in the first drive, returning the pick 65 yards before lateralling the ball to defensive tackle Aaron Hodges who got down to the one-yardline. The defense also forced two fumbles in the next three drives to keep the offense from scoring until the seventh series.
The Illini offense got on the board on the seventh drive with a three-yard touchdown pass from senior Jon Beutjer to fullback Carey Davis. Beutjer moved the squad down the field getting four first downs on the drive. The score was set up by a 12-yard and three-yard run by freshman running back Ibrahim (E.B.) Halsey. On the last drive before halftime, Halsey took the ball in from one yard out to score the scrimmage's second touchdown. He ran the ball five times during the possession for 35 yards.
The second-team offense got in on the scoring right after halftime putting together a seven-play drive, which culminated in a 19-yard Franklin Payne touchdown catch from freshman Tim Brasic. Brasic was 4-for-4 on the drive for 57 yards, with completions of 12 yards to Payne and 18 yards to Haywood.
The final interception came on another deflected pass and defensive tackle Mike Maloney took advantage with a 31-yard return. On the final drive of the scrimmage walk-on quarterback Matt Rinklin led the squad down the field in four plays handing the ball off to fullback Jason Davis for the one-yard touchdown.
Turner honored the most improved players of the spring at halftime with the annual Bresee Awards and the winners were offensive tackle Bryan Koch (offense), defensive tackle (defense) and placekicker John Gockman (special teams).
