CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- University of Illinois wide receiver Michael Dean signed a free agent contract today to play professional football for the Carolina Panthers, joining fellow teammate Mike McGee.

Dean, who started every game at split end for the Illini this season, was the team's leading receiver with 608 yards and four touchdowns. He jumped into the starting lineup after finishing the spring season without a spot on the two-deep. Dean was the leader for the receiving corp, as the only wideout with game experience to begin the season. He hauled in 45 catches in 1999 for an average of 13 yards a reception.

Deans joins the list of seven Illini slated to join the NFL: Neil Rackers (Cincinnati, 6th round), Danny Clark (Jacksonville, 7th round), Mike McGee (Carolina), Elmer Hickman (Miami), Rameel Connor (Miami), Tony Francis (Philadelphia).
