March 30, 2013
CHICAGO - The Fighting Illini held their ninth spring practice at their home away from home, Chicago, with a spirited two hour, 30 minute practice under the lights at Gately Stadium on Friday, March 29, in front of several hundred Illinois fans, families and recruits.
"It enables Illini fans to come see us," Illinois head coach Tim Beckman said of practicing in Chicago. "It enables parents to come by and watch their sons practice instead of driving to Champaign, and it helps us to reach out to recruits."
Prior to the practice at Gately Stadium, Beckman and Illinois Director of Athletics Mike Thomas held a press conference at Soldier Field to talk about the Sept. 14 Chicago Homecoming game against Washington. Beckman also stopped by the Comcast SportsNet Chicago stadium to meet with Dave Kaplan for a SportsTalk Live segment.
The Fighting Illini have two weeks of spring practice remaining, culminating in the annual Orange and Blue Spring Game on Friday, April 12, at 8 p.m. CT under the lights at Memorial Stadium. The Spring Game will be televised live on the Big Ten Network. Admission and parking for the game is be free.
Next weekend, April 4-6, Illinois hosts the annual Illinois High School Football Coaches Association (IHSFCA) Clinic in Champaign. Practice resumes on Monday, April 1, at 3:30 p.m. after the holiday weekend.
