Williams And Benn Named To Scout.com's Top-100 Players of 2009
Jan. 23, 2009
Scout.com released its list of the Top-100 collegiate football players returning for the 2009 season, and Illinois' quarterback Juice Williams and receiver Arrelious Benn were named among the best in the nation. Williams entered in at No. 35 and Benn at No. 38. The pair were also among the top-10 Big Ten players listed at fifth and sixth respectively. Players were also rated by position with Benn ranked as the No. 2 receiver and Williams the 10th-best signal caller.
Williams will return in 2009 for his fourth year as a starter for the Illini, after passing for 6,400 yards in his first three. He will need just 2,320 yards to become the school's top passer. He is the first quarterback in school history to rush for over 2,000 career yards and with 700 yards, could move into the school's top-5 all-time. In 2008, Williams broke three Stadium total offense records when he posted 461 total yards at the Edward Jones Dome, 431 at Michigan Stadium and 503 yards at home against Minnesota.
Benn became the first Illini receiver to top the 1,000-yard receiving mark since 2002 and only the second sophomore in school history to hit the milestone (Brandon Lloyd, 2001). He earned first-team All-Big Ten honors and fourth-team All-America honors after posting 1,055 yards on 67 catches. He put together four straight 100-yard games, the first receiver in Illinois history to accomplish the feat, and finished second in the Big Ten in receptions and receiving yards per game.
