CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The University of Illinois and University of Kansas have finalized a home-and-home series for the 2023 and 2024 football seasons, both schools announced Tuesday. The Fighting Illini will travel to Lawrence, Kan., to face the Jayhawks on Sept. 9, 2023, with KU returning the game in Champaign on Sept. 7, 2024.
"This series with Kansas is another great addition that fits in with our scheduling philosophy," Illinois Director of Athletics Mike Thomas said. "We have set out to schedule games against some outstanding institutions and I feel like we've done that with home-and-home series finalized for North Carolina, South Florida, Virginia and now Kansas."
The Big Ten will move to a nine-game conference slate starting in 2016, with each team alternating between having five home/four road games and four home/five road games every other year. Though Big Ten schedules have only been released through 2019, if the pattern holds true in 2023, the Illinois-KU meeting in Lawrence will fall on a year when Illinois has five Big Ten home games and four road games, keeping the opportunity open for seven Illini home games. Illini would then have four B1G home games and five B1G road games in 2024, when the Jayhawks are set to come to Champaign.
Illinois and Kansas have faced each other five times previously, with the Illini holding a 3-2 series edge. The Jayhawks won the most recent meeting, 47-7, in 1968. The other four meetings all came prior to 1930.
