Illini in Big Ten Openers
Illinois is 63-41 all-time in Big Ten opening games ... The Illini are 41-17 when opening the Big Ten season at home, and 20-5 at the Assembly Hall in Big Ten openers ... This is the 10th time in the last 14 years that Illinois begins Big Ten play at home ... This is the seventh time that Illinois and Northwestern open the Big Ten season against each other, with the Illini owning owning a 5-1 advantage over the Wildcats in conference openers ... The last time Illinois and Northwestern tipped off Big Ten play against each other was on Jan. 7, 1993, when the Illini defeated the Wildcats 81-71 at Evanston.
In each of its eight wins, Illinois has topped 70 points and recorded at least 15 assists.
Illinois plays a pair of ranked teams this week, hosting No. 25 Northwestern (AP poll) on Wednesday and facing No. 22 Gonzaga (Coaches poll) on Saturday in Chicago. The Illini carry a two-game winning streak against Top 25 teams, with victories at No. 18/19 Clemson on Dec. 2 and against No. 24 Vanderbilt (Coaches poll) on Dec. 8.
The Illini are 84-16 at Assembly Hall under Weber, a winning percentage of 84 percent.
All five Illini starters are scoring in double figures, averaging between 10.4 and 14.1 points.
Over the last five games, Demetri McCamey is averaging 18.2 points (91) on 60 percent shooting from the field (33-55) and 50 percent from 3-point range (9-18).
D.J. Richardson ranks third in the Big Ten in 3-point field goal percentage at 48.9 percent (22-45).
Mike Tisdale ranks fourth in the conference in field goal percentage (.600) third in free throw percentage (.893) and fifth in blocked shots (2.0 bpg).
Davis has been the Illini's leading rebounder in all but one game this season.
Davis leads Big Ten players with six double-doubles this season. He ranks second in the Big Ten with 15 career double-doubles, trailing only Ohio State's Evan Turner (18).
Tisdale recently moved into the Illini Top 10 for career blocked shots. Tisdale currently has 87 blocks, tied for ninth place on the UI all-time list with Lowell Hamilton (1986-89).
Brandon Paul has already recorded three 20-point games to start his UI career, with 22 vs. SIU Edwardsville, 20 vs. Northern Illinois and 20 vs. Clemson.
Illinois ranks 17th in the nation in assists (17.1 apg) and 13th in assist/turnover ratio (1.4).
The Illini rank 24th in the NCAA in field goal percentage (.482).
In its eight wins, Illinois' offense is averaging 84.4 points (675) on 52.1 percent shooting (228-438) and 19.6 assists (157), while in four losses, the offense is averaging 65.3 points (261) on 40.8 percent shooting (102-250) and 12.0 assists (48).
Basketball Reunion Wednesday
The Illinois basketball program and Varsity I Association host the annual Fighting Illini basketball reunion Wednesday. Former UI players, managers, support staff and their families - a group totaling approximately 200 - will return to campus and attend pre-game reception at the Colonnades Club, followed by the Illini-Northwestern game.
