The coaches' clinic in Champaign will include seven lectures, three Fighting Illini practices, a social and question-and-answer session with Coach Groce and his staff, and three meals. The clinic fee is $85 in advance or $95 at the door.
Serving as featured speaker this year is Stan Van Gundy, a 30-year coaching veteran at the NBA and college levels. Van Gundy was head coach of the Orlando Magic from 2007-12, leading the Magic to four 50-plus win seasons, three division titles and five playoff appearances, including the 2009 NBA Finals. A two-time NBA All-Star game head coach, Van Gundy also coached the Miami Heat from 2003-05, leading the Heat to the 2005 Eastern Conference Finals.
Respected across the NBA for his innovative offensive philosophy, Van Gundy will conduct a pair of lectures, covering the topics of half-court offense and special situations. Groce's speaking topic, meanwhile, is on playing with pace and purpose. The Illini assistant coaches will each host a session on skill development, with Jamall Walker focusing on guards, Paris Parham on wings, and Dustin Ford on forwards/posts. Mike Basgier also will have a presentation regarding strength and conditioning.
The Illini practice once on Friday afternoon and will have split practices on Saturday surrounding the lectures.
Saturday's Coaches' Clinic in Chicago will be held at the Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center (1250 W. 119th Street). It will include lectures from Coach Groce and his assistants covering the same topics described above, and will conclude with a social and Q&A session with the entire Illini staff. The clinic fee for Chicago is $30.
