Sept. 18, 2013
Registration is underway for the second annual John Groce Basketball Coaches Clinic, scheduled for Oct. 11-12 at the Ubben Basketball Practice Facility on the University of Illinois campus.
Serving as featured speaker this year is 2013 NBA Coach of the Year George Karl. Following his 25-year tenure in the NBA, Karl is the sixth-winningest head coach in league history with 1,131 wins. He led the Denver Nuggets to a franchise-record 57 victories last season en route to coach of the year honors. Karl directed Denver to playoff appearances in each of his nine years, highlighted by five 50-win seasons and three Northwestern Division titles. He previously guided the Seattle SuperSonics to the 1996 NBA Finals and the Milwaukee Bucks to the 2001 Eastern Conference Finals. In addition, Karl is a four-time NBA All-Star game head coach.
Another guest speaker at this year's clinic is Todd Lickliter. Now in his second year at Marian University in Indianapolis, Lickliter is a 34-year coaching veteran. He was the 2007 National Coach of the Year at Butler, guiding the Bulldogs to a pair of Sweet 16 appearances. Lickliter also spent three years as head coach at Iowa. His tenure has spanned both the high school and college levels, as Lickliter also worked Danville High School in Indiana, serving as Coach Groce's high school coach.
Coach Groce will speak to the coaches on Oct. 11, while Karl and Lickliter are scheduled for Oct. 12. In addition to the speakers, the clinic also includes two Fighting Illini practices, a social and question-and-answer session with Coach Groce and his staff at his house, and three meals. The fee is $90 in advance or $100 at the door.
