A Night of Legends Set For September 13
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. In what is sure to be one of the most anticipated events of the year, some of the greatest Fighting Illini basketball players in the storied history of Illinois basketball will once again be on the Assembly Hall court for A Night of Legends.
One of the greatest starting lineups in NCAA history will be reunited Saturday, Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. for A Night of Legends, an alumni game featuring some of the best Fighting Illini players from the past 20 years.
"This should be a extremely special evening for Illini basketball fans and the former players who will return," said Weber. "Deron Williams' Point of Hope Foundation dinner in Chicago the night before gave us this rare opportunity to pull many of these guys together. The response has been very, very good from the former players. I know they enjoy getting together as much as the fans will enjoy seeing them back on the floor."
Illinois men's basketball season ticket holders have the first opportunity to purchase tickets for the event. Tickets are $15 each. Should tickets remain following the sale to season ticket holders, the general public will have an opportunity to purchase tickets beginning Aug. 21 from the UI Athletics Ticket Office located at the Assembly Hall or on-line at www.fightingillini.com.
Some of the former Fighting Illini greats who have committed to the event include Williams, Luther Head, James Augustine, Roger Powell, and possibly the most popular Illini ever, Dee Brown. Members of the 1989 Flying Illini who have confirmed their attendance include Kenny Battle, Kendall Gill and Steve Bardo. Other greats who plan to attend include long-time NBA start Brian Cook, Frank Williams, Marcus Griffin, Sergio McClain, Victor Chukwudebe and Kiwane Garris.
In addition, the University of Illinois will honor the most decorated basketball players in school history by hanging jerseys from the rafters of the Assembly Hall. The first player jersey announced for this honor is current U.S. Olympian Deron Williams.
"This will be a terrific way to permanently recognize some of the greatest players in Fighting Illini history," said Weber. "Deron is the first of 20 men's players and one women's player who have been selected to have their jerseys hung at the Assembly Hall. He obviously established himself as one of our all-time greats in helping lead us to the national championship game in 2005. He has also gone on as a great ambassador of our program as he is established as one of the rising stars of the NBA and as a member of the U.S. Olympic team competing in Beijing over the next few weeks."
The additional players to be honored, as well as the selection criteria, will be announced over the coming weeks.
Deron Williams is hosting the Illini Hoop Legends for Charity Friday, Sept. 12 at The Palmer House in Chicago benefiting the Deron Williams Point of Hope Foundation and several Illinois-based charities.
