Statement from UI Director of Athletics Ron Guenther on Johnny Kerr
Feb. 27, 2009
Statement from University of Illinois Director of Athletics Ron Guenther on the passing of Johnny "Red" Kerr: "The passing of Johnny "Red" Kerr is something that touches a large number
of people. John never forgot his roots here at the University of Illinois
and was a great friend whose loyalty will always be remembered. He stepped
forward whenever he was asked to help in any way. John had an incredible
career at Tilden Tech High School, the University of Illinois and as a
player, coach and announcer in the NBA. We are happy that he was able to see
how important he was to the Illinois basketball program in September during
the Night of Legends when his jersey was honored and hung at the Assembly
Hall. The recognition he received at the United Center on Feb. 10 was a
special night for a very special man. The name Johnny "Red" Kerr will always
be legendary in Chicago and at the University of Illinois, and he'll be
greatly missed. Our sincere condolences, and our thoughts and prayers, go
out to the Kerr family."
