Help Illinois Celebrate 75 Years of March Madness
Jan. 25, 2013
The NCAA is celebrating 75 years of March Madness this year, and Fighting Illini fans can get involved for a chance to win tickets to the Final Four.
Fans can submit a video showing "What does Madness look like on you?" at our special March Madness page on the Fighting Illini Athletics Facebook page for a chance to win tickets to the Final Four. Videos must be submitted by January 31, be 30 seconds or less in length, and must convey the emotion you feel for Illinois basketball.
Prior to the February 3 Illinois game against Wisconsin, special NCAA 75th anniversary t-shirts will be distributed to the first 100 fans that arrive at Assembly Hall.
At the Feb. 3 game against the Badgers, former Illinois coach Harry Combes will be honored. Combes made a huge impact on the UI program, directing the Fighting Illini to 316 victories during his 20 seasons at Illinois from 1948-67. Combes led the UI to three Final Fours and Big Ten championships in 1949, 1951 and 1952, and a fourth Big Ten title in 1963. Last season, a banner was raised to the Assembly Hall rafters to honor Combes' legacy at Illinois. His daughter, Jane Austermiller, will receive a commemorative 75th Celebration regulation-size Wilson Basketball at the Wisconsin game in her father's honor.
In addition, Fighting Illini fans can look for special "Throwback Thursday" photos commemorating great Illinois March Madness moments on the Fighting Illini Basketball Facebook page and @IlliniHoops Twitter account each Thursday throughout the season. The first Throwback Thursday photo has already been posted.
