Luther Head scored a game-high 17 points as Illinois defeated SIU-Edwardsville 78-58 Friday in exhibition play.

Illinois held its first exhibition game Friday night at the Assembly Hall, defeating Southern Illinois-Edwardsville by the score of 78-58. The UI senior class combined for 47 points, led by a game-high 17 points from Luther Head and 16 from Roger Powell, Jr.
Junior Deron Williams, who was limited to just 15 minutes of action due to foul trouble, scored all eight of his points during the first four minutes on a jumper and back-to-back 3-pointers as Illinois grabbed a 12-5 lead. His second trey began a 16-0 run that saw Illinois jump out to a 20-point advantage at the 13-minute mark. Illinois led 43-26 at halftime after shooting over 51 percent from the field and forcing SIUE into 13 first-half turnovers.
Four players accounted for Illinois' first 22 points of the second half, as Jack Ingram and Powell each scored seven and James Augustine and Head each added four. Ingram's last basket made the score 61-35 with 13 minutes left and gave the Illini its largest lead of the game at 26 points.
The Illini shot 50.8 percent on the night, but struggled from the 3-point line, making just four of 20 attempts. Powell shot 7-of-9 from the field en route to his 16 points, while snagging four rebounds. Head's 17 points came on 6-of-9 accuracy from the field. Ingram and Augustine also finished in double figures, adding 10 points apiece.
Nick Smith grabbed a game-high six rebounds and also had three blocked shots. The Illini had seven blocks and 10 steals for the game. Head led the way with four steals.
Dan Heimos was the lone SIU-Edwardsville player in double figures, finishing with 12 points.
Illinois returns to the Assembly Hall for its final exhibition game on Sunday, Nov. 14, hosting Lewis University at 3 p.m.
