Champaign, Ill. - Illinois defeated Florida Southern 82-61 on Sunday afternoon in an exhibition game at the Assembly Hall. The Illini took a 54-28 advantage into halftime, closing the opening frame on a 23-6 run. The Orange and Blue extended their lead to 30 in the second half before wrapping up the contest with a final 21-point margin.
Eleven Illini entered the scoring column led by a game-high 17 points from senior Trent Meacham, who went 4-of-6 from 3-point range to go along with four assists and no turnovers. Sophomore Mike Davis and senior Calvin Brock joined Meacham in double digits. Davis notched 11 points and six boards, while Brock turned in 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
Head coach Bruce Weber utilized a variety of lineups in preparation for the regular season, trying two, three and even four guard combos. Newcomers Dominique Keller and Stan Simpson impressed in their first competition for the Illini. Keller, the junior college transfer, had eight points in 14 minutes, while the true-freshman Simpson brought down six boards in just seven minutes along with 4-4 shooting from the charity stripe.
Illinois shot 43 percent from both the field (30-70) and 3-point range (6-14), while holding Florida Southern to 39 percent (20-51) and 26 percent (5-19) from the respective lands. The Illini held a 48-33 advantage on the boards, and were 16-21 from the free throw line compared to 16-32 for the Moccasins.
Illinois plays its final exhibition game next Sunday, Nov. 9, at the Assembly Hall against Lewis University. That game is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. CT and will be streamed live on bigtennetwork.com.
