Orange & Blue Scrimmage Review
Oct. 17, 2013
Illinois continued its preseason preparations by holding the annual Orange & Blue Scrimmage on Thursday night in front of 4,786 fans at State Farm Center. Coach John Groce once again had the Illini play four 8-minute quarters, with each quarter contested as its own game. The rosters changed each quarter, giving the staff a look at a number of different lineups.
The Orange team of Tracy Abrams, Mike LaTulip, Joseph Bertrand, Jon Ekey, Nnanna Egwu, Jaylon Tate and Maverick Morgan posted a 16-10 win in the first quarter, defeating the Blue team of Ahmad Starks, Aaron Cosby, Rayvonte Rice, Malcolm Hill, Darius Paul, Austin Colbert and Kendrick Nunn. LaTulip scored seven points for Orange in the quarter with Egwu adding six, while Starks led the Blue with four points.
The second quarter was a route, as the Blue team of Tate, Abrams, Rice, Hill, Egwu, Paul and Cosby racked up a 20-3 win over the Orange team of Starks, Nunn, Bertrand, Ekey, Morgan, LaTulip and Colbert. Egwu and Rice combined for 14 of Blue's 20 points in the quarter, netting seven points apiece.
The Orange team of Abrams, Rice, Ekey, Hill, Morgan, Bertrand and LaTulip earned an 18-13 win in the third quarter over the Blue team of Tate, Nunn, Cosby, Colbert, Paul, Egwu and Starks. Rice led Orange with six points in that quarter, with Abrams and LaTulip chipping in four each. Cosby and Nunn scored five each to pace Blue.
The fourth quarter brought bonus basketball, as the score was tied at 14 following the eight-minute stretch. Overtime was played under 'next basket wins' rules, and thanks to a bucket by Rayvonte Rice, the Blue squad of LaTulip, Cosby, Rice, Hill, Morgan, Colbert and Tate was victorious over the Orange squad of Abrams, Nunn, Bertrand, Ekey, Paul, Starks and Egwu. LaTulip and Morgan scored four points apiece for Blue in the fourth quarter, while Ekey drained a pair of treys to tally six for Orange.
The Illini had three players score in double figures on the night. Egwu and Rice led the way with 17 points each, while LaTulip added 15. Egwu made 8-of-9 from the field and added six rebounds and two blocks. Rice made 6-of-10 shots and had three boards and two steals. LaTulip did most of his damage at the free throw line, shooting a perfect 10-for-10 from the stripe.
Cosby had nine points, while seven UI players finished the night with six - Abrams, Ekey, Hill, Morgan, Nunn, Starks and Tate. Hill also had six rebounds and Tate had a game-high three assists.
Colbert and Bertrand added four points each and although Paul made just one basket, he grabbed a team-best seven rebounds.
Illinois returns to State Farm Center one week from tonight, hosting McKendree in an exhibition game Oct. 24 at 7 p.m.
