    Baseball America Freshman All-America Teams

DURHAM, N.C. - Starting pitcher Kevin Duchene was named a Freshman All-American by a third organization, Baseball America announced Monday. After collecting the honor from Collegiate Baseball Newspaper and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) last month, Duchene was one of four starting pitchers picked to Baseball America's Second Team. The Joliet, Ill., native is one of two Big Ten players along with Michigan's Jacob Cronenworth among the standout freshmen on the First and Second Teams.

Duchene is the 11th Illini to earn Freshman All-America honors in program history and becomes the Illini's fourth Freshman All-American in the last six years, joining outfielder Casey McMurray in 2008, outfielder Willie Argo in 2009 and multiple-position player Reid Roper last season. He also was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year, second-team All-Big Ten and to the All-Big Ten Freshman Team this season.

Duchene (9-1) tied for the most wins in the conference with nine along with finishing tied for fifth with 68 strikeouts and ninth with a 2.79 ERA, which all led the Illini. His nine wins are the most by an Illinois pitcher since Brian Blomquist's 10 in 2005 and set the school record for most wins by a freshman, breaking John Kravetz's mark of eight from 2012.

Duchene appeared in 18 games and made 12 starts, highlighted by a two-hit shutout with a career-high 11 strikeouts against Penn State (5/10/13) that earned him Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors. After giving up nine earned runs in his first two starts, he only allowed 16 earned runs in his final 10 starts, finishing the year with three earned runs or fewer in 10 straight starts. His lone loss came against Eastern Illinois (4/9) in which he gave up two runs over 5.1 innings. He also pitched six times out the bullpen and did not give up an earned run in eight innings.

After winning his final start of the season at the Nashville Regional to wrap up a record-setting freshman season, Duchene is playing for the Madison Mallards in the Northwoods League this summer.
