Champaign, Ill. - Illinois first baseman Andy Schutzenhofer was named a second-team freshman All-American by Baseball America, the publication announced today. Schutzenhofer, whose .375 average was tops for Illinois this season, has also earned first-team All-Big Ten, first-team ABCA Mideast Region and Collegiate Baseball All-America honors this spring.

Schutzenhofer hit a team-leading .375 this season while destroying UI's freshmen records in hits (87) and RBI (63) en route to becoming the only freshman in the conference to earn first-team All-Big Ten honors. Schutzenhofer, who hit clean-up a majority of the season, also led the team in three other offensive categories, including home runs (7), total bases (124) and slugging percentage (.534).

The Swansea, Ill. native ranked first among conference freshmen in batting average (.375), hits (87), runs (48) and RBI (63). He also ranked in the top five overall in the Big Ten in average, hits and RBI and ranked among league leaders in runs scored and doubles. Schutzenhofer enjoyed his finest weekend this season at Michigan State, where he hit .707 (12-17) with three doubles, seven runs and six RBI over the four-game set in East Lansing.
