CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Catcher Lars Davis (Grande Prairie, Alberta, Canada) and shortstop Shawn Roof (Paducah, Ky.) each recently began their professional careers, with Davis playing in his minor league opener Tuesday night and Roof seeing his first minor league action Wednesday. Davis is currently with the Tri-City Dust Devils, the Colorado Rockies' short-season single-A affiliate based in Pasco, Wash., while Roof is playing for the GCL Tigers, Detroit's rookie-league affiliate in Lakeland, Fla.
The pair become the 10th and 11th former Illini currently in professional baseball. Chris Basak became the most recent former Illini to reach the Major Leagues when the New York Yankees purchased his contract from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on June 5. He joins the St. Louis Cardinals' Scott Spiezio as the two former Illini currently in the big leagues.
