CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Catcher Lars Davis (Grande Prairie, Alberta, Canada) was named to the All-Ping! first team and the American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings Division I All-America third team Tuesday after becoming the first Illini player to hit .400 in a season since 1996 and 22nd in school history. The awards give him three national honors this season, making him the most decorated Illini baseball player since Jason Anderson was a three-time All-American in 2000.

Davis, who recently signed a professional contract with the Colorado Rockies after being selected by the club in the third round of the MLB First-Year Player Draft, was one of four Big Ten players honored by Ping! and one of three selected by the ABCA. Michigan's Zach Putnam was a second-team ABCA All-American and an honorable mention selection by Ping! as a utility player, and Ohio State pitcher Cory Luebke was a third-team selection by both organizations. Ping! also honored Purdue pitcher Matt Bischoff as a third-team selection.

The former Illini catcher will begin his professional career Tuesday night in Vancouver when his team, the Tri-City Dust Devils, opens its season in Vancouver. Tri-City is the Rockies' short-season single-A affiliate based in Pasco, Wash.
