DES PLAINES, Ill. - Hey Illini Fans! Mike Stankiewicz here reporting from home in Des Plaines, Illinois. I am one of the few Illini players who has the opportunity to play close to home. I am playing for the Crystal Lake Cardinals in Crystal Lake, Ill. Our season began a few weeks ago and everything is in full swing. We are currently 5-5 on the year. We went through a rough spell last weekend losing four straight games, but I don't have a doubt in my mind we will have a successful rest of the season.
Summer baseball is always a great time for both the fans and the players. What better to do than have a hot dog at the ballpark on a warm, sunny day and watch some college baseball? Although Chicagoland summers are sometimes rather unbearable with excessive humidity and heat indices, we have been fortunate to have excellent weather for our games as well as great fans. Away from our academic responsibilities and studies we're normally occupied with at school, summer league baseball provides players the time and resources necessary to improving their game.
The summer season allows us as players to play against former teammates, friends or even current teammates as in my case. I have the opportunity to play against current teammates Nick Stockwell and Matt Dittman of the Lombard Orioles and Kevin Manson of the Crestwood Panthers. It will be great to see these guys again over the summer and see how they are performing. After all, that is what summer baseball is all about--improving your skills and getting ready for next season.
