Justin Parr Named NCBWA First-Team All-American
June 12, 2013
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - After being named Illinois' Dike Eddleman Athlete of the Year on Tuesday, senior Justin Parr garnered three more All-America honors this week, bringing his season total to four. Parr, who was tabbed a Louisville Slugger first-team All-American by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper two weeks ago, added to his accolades when the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) voted him a first-team All-American outfielder and Baseball America and Perfect Game each placed him on their Second Team.
The Chillicothe, Ill., native is the first Illini to earn first-team All-America honors since Lars Davis (PING! Baseball) in 2007. He is the 45th postseason All-American in Illinois history and his first-team selection makes him the highest-regarded Illini by an active organization (PING! Baseball no longer names All-Americans) since Jason Anderson was named to the Collegiate Baseball second team and ABCA first team in 2000.
Parr, who led the conference with a .398 average and 92 hits, is one of two NCBWA first-team honorees from the Big Ten along with Indiana catcher Kyle Schwarber. Both players were placed on the Second Team by Baseball America. Parr was named Big Ten Player of the Year after ending the regular season first in the conference in average, hits, RBI, on-base percentage, total bases and fielding percentage. A first-team All-Big Ten selection, he earned his first Big Ten Player of the Week (4/15) honor after hitting for the cycle against Purdue.
Parr turned in the second-longest hitting streak in the nation in 2013 with a school-record mark of 33 games. He led the Illini with 25 extra-base hits, including a team-high 15 doubles and four triples to go along with a career-high six home runs. He also notched a team-best 53 RBI, scored 43 runs and tallied 16 stolen bases.
Parr was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the eighth round of last week's MLB First-Year Player Draft. After signing with the club on Wednesday, he practiced for the first time with the Williamsport Crosscutters, the Phillies' Class A Short Season Affiliate.
