CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The University of Illinois baseball team will send 21 players to summer leagues across the country, from Fayetteville, N.C., to Laramie, Wyo., highlighted by seven Illini playing in the prestigious Northwoods League. The first summer team featuring Illinois players got underway Wednesday night as Christian Cummins, Matt Milroy and Lee Zerrusen started their summer with the Fayetteville SwampDogs of the Coastal Plain League. Fans can follow Illinois players throughout the season here.

Those seven Illini playing in the NWL will dot the rosters of familiar teams, with All-Big Ten third-team shortstop Josh Parr, pitcher Bryan Roberts and catcher Adam Davis will head to Madison, Wis., to play for the Madison Mallards. First baseman Matt Dittman will look to pick up where his 2010 spring season was cut short by a wrist injury when he heads to Rochester, Minn., to play for the 2009 NWL champions, the Rochester Honkers. Pitcher Will Strack and outfielder Willie Argo will play for the Waterloo Bucks in Waterloo, Iowa, and utility player Pete Cappetta will add versatility to the Duluth Huskies' lineup. The NWL season starts on June 2.

In the Prospect League, pitchers Kevin Johnson and Brian de la Torriente will play for the DuPage Dragons in Lisle, Ill., while pitcher Corey Kimes and outfielder Davis Hendrickson will play for the Springfield Sliders. Outfielder Pat Sheehan will round out the Illini in the Prospect League as he plays for the Hannibal Cavemen in Hannibal, Mo. The Prospect League begins play on June 3.

Pitcher Tanner Libby and infielder Bill Charvat will head east to Adrian, Mich., to play for the Lake Erie Monarchs to play in the Great Lakes League, which begins play on June 11. Farther east, pitcher Wes Braun will return to the Albany Dutchmen in the New York Collegiate Baseball League, where he found success in the summer of 2009. The NYCBL opens its season on June 4.

The Fighting Illini player who will be the farthest-flung from Champaign is catcher Matt Cervantes, who will play for the Laramie (Wyo.) Colts of the Mountain Collegiate Baseball League. Laramie's season begins May 28. Pitcher John Anderson will join the Derby (Kan.) Twins in the Jayhawk League, with Derby's season opening on June 2, while outfielder Doug Schumacher will round out the group of Illini playing summer ball as he competes for the Crystal Lake Cards of the Chicago Suburban Baseball League. Crystal Lake will begin its season on June 2.
