Illini pitcher Lee Zerrusen, who will be starting on his birthday on Friday, returns with this week's version of Diamond Notes.

Hey Illini Fans,
Welcome to this week's edition of Diamond Notes. After dropping a series at home against Michigan, we split our mid-week games against Illinois State and Eastern Illinois. If you didn't notice, our game against Eastern Illinois was on TV on WEIU. Since I'm starting on Friday this week, I stayed home and was able to record it. Daniel "Fess" Parker watched his game-tying, two-out hit in the ninth inning at least four or five times.
Losing a home series is never good but we have to bounce back quickly because we have to play Michigan State this weekend. The Spartans have had a very good start to the year, so we are looking to knock them down a notch.
Before leaving for the game on Wednesday, we had a special guest speaker in the clubhouse. Coach Hartleb was able to have Jim Fanning come talk to us about some mental aspects of the game. Mr. Fanning was the mental coach for numerous All-Stars, MVPs, Cy Young winners and playoff winning teams. His speech gave us some things to think about and hopefully it will help get us on a roll as we get further into the conference season.
On a side note, this is a special weekend for me as my birthday is Friday, but my parents will be missing their first trip of the season. Apparently they have to stay home for my little sister's prom. Same thing happened last year. I guess we all know who the favorite child in the family is now.
