PARK RIDGE, Ill. - Junior second baseman Ryan Hastings (Mattoon, Ill.) was named Big Ten Player of the Week by the conference office Tuesday. Hastings smashed opposing pitching last week, hitting .727 (8-for-11) over three games, including a 6-for-7 (.857) effort in a doubleheader against Ohio State. It is Illinois' second Player of the Week honor in the past three weeks as Lars Davis earned the award on March 26.
Hastings slugged 1.000 and reached base at a .750 clip last week, scoring five runs, driving in two and homering. He had at least two hits and a run in each game against Western Michigan and Ohio State, scoring the game-winning run against the Buckeyes in Sunday's first game. He now ranks fifth in batting average in Big Ten games with a .476 mark and has a hit in 12 of his last 13 contests, including eight multiple-hit games in that span.
The Illini (11-12) face Bradley (14-12) Tuesday at 6:05 p.m. at Illinois Field. Illinois has won nine of its last 13 games, including two of its last three. The Braves have dropped five of their last nine, including losing two of three at Missouri State this past weekend. Tonight will mark the second of three Missouri Valley Conference opponents the Illini will face this season. Illinois lost to Indiana State on March 27, while the Orange and Blue will play Illinois State on April 17 and Southern Illinois on May 1.
