Illinois' Arlis Earns Big Ten Player Of The Week Honors

April 2, 2001

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - University of Illinois sophomore catcher Patrick Arlis was named Big Ten Player of the Week, the conference office announced today. The Glendale Heights, Ill., native hit .429 over four games against Northwestern, including three home runs, one a game-winning grand slam, and 10 RBI as Illinois took three of four against the Wildcats.

Arlis came into the weekend with only one home run on the year and hit three against NU, including the game-winner in game two of the series. He collected a team-high 10 RBI with an impressive 1.071 slugging percentage. Over the course of the weekend Arlis set or tied personal single-game career-highs in hits, runs , home runs, RBI and stolen bases, and collected three of his four career multi-RBI games. In game one of the series, Arlis had three of Illinois' five RBI in a game Illinois won 5-2. Included in that was a sixth inning two-run home run that cleared the Illinois Field scoreboard. In game two Arlis collected a career-high five RBI as he hit a sac fly in the first inning to get Illinois on the board early and then added a grand slam in the sixth inning to cap a 10-run Illini comeback. Arlis hit his third home run of the weekend in game three, sending a two-run shot to center in the fifth inning to propel Illinois to its third-straight win over Northwestern.

This is Arlis' first Big Ten Player of the Week honor and the third in a row for the Illini, with leftfielder Rob Fischer earning Player of the Week honors two weeks ago and Andy Dickinson taking home Pitcher of the Week honors last week. Illinois, 13-12 overall and 4-3 in the Big Ten, hosts Western Michigan Tuesday at 6:35 pm and Wednesday at 4:05 pm before traveling to Ohio State for a four-game conference series next Friday-Sunday.
