PARK RIDGE, Ill. - University of Illinois freshman second baseman Thomas Lindauer was named Big Ten Co-Freshman of the Week, the conference office announced Monday. Lindauer went 3-for-7 (.429) with two RBIs and three runs in a pair of starts at the end of the Illini's spring trip, lifting the Orange and Blue to victories in both games.
Lindauer, who had only four at bats this season entering Saturday's game against Saint Louis, got the start at second base against the Billikens and responded by going 2-for-4 with a run scored. On Sunday against Southern Illinois, he was 1-for-3 with the game-winning two-RBI single in the twelfth inning, and reached base all five times he went to the plate against the Salukis. Lindauer drove in a pair of runs and scored twice against SIU, drawing a walk, being hit by a pitch and reaching on an error and a fielder's choice in the game.
It is the first time an Illini has won the Freshman of the Week award, which was instituted by the Big Ten at the beginning of this season.
The Illini open the home season Friday at 3 p.m. against Indiana State at Illinois Field. Admission is free to all home games in 2011 and the first 100 fans through the gates each day will be able to pick up the 2011 schedule magnet. Fans can win prizes by playing baseball bingo during Friday's game and 10 free tickets to Illinois' game against Missouri at Busch Stadium on March 29 will be given away throughout the series. Posters and schedule cards also will be available all weekend.
