Lee Zerrusen looks ahead to the Western Kentucky series and pays tribute to former team manager and Diamond Notes author Michael Schroeder.

Hey Illini Fans,
Last weekend was a tough set of games for us. We went 0-3 to bring our record to 3-6. We have put that weekend behind us as we prepare to travel to Bowling Green, Ky., for a series against Western Kentucky. Originally, we were supposed to play in a tournament in Minneapolis, but damage to the roof of the Metrodome altered those plans. We are lucky to have found a quality opponent to replace those games.
The past author of the Diamond Notes and former Illinois baseball manager, Michael Schroeder, has found a home at Western Kentucky as the sports information director for the Hilltopper men's basketball team. I did my very best to get him to write a guest blog this week, but he was busy with bigger and better things. A quick story on Schroeder: when he was the team manager during my first three years on the team his biggest pet peeve was when people would give him extravagant pizza orders during our trips. Usually, guys just order sausage, pepperoni or cheese. All I can say is that there was one incident with Bill Barrett that caused Schroeder to get pretty snappy. In his years as team manager, though, he made sure everything ran smoothly and was a great asset to the program.
This weekend is the first time we will make the entire trip by bus. Bus travel is a different animal than flying. I actually prefer it because I am not cramped into a tiny airplane seat and I hate waiting around in the airport. In my opinion, the entertainment on the bus is superior as well. I usually take in the movie (go-to movies for us are Wedding Crashers, Major League, or anything with Will Ferrell) or play around on my iPad. Adding to the experience is usually a heated round of cards or "Mafia" game. The reactions and arguments are priceless.
If anyone has any questions or things that you want me to write about send me an email at firstname.lastname@example.org
That's all for this week, Go Illini!
