Diamond Notes #3: Snow Prevents Texas Tech Trip
March 10, 2008
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Well Illini Fans, as I'm sure you noticed already we didn't play any baseball this weekend - except for three days of scrimmages at the indoor practice facility. Our entire series against Texas Tech was cancelled because of bad weather down south. It seems like the bad weather hits us before we get south this year, instead of preventing us from getting home like happened a few times last season.
Obviously it's too bad that we couldn't play any games this weekend, but it wasn't a total waste. The scrimmages were played just like games, and our guys approached them in that way. The starting pitchers went as long as they would in a game so they wouldn't fall behind with game condition. And the hitters got a number of at bats in game situations, too.
Coming up is the annual spring trip to Bradenton, Florida. Starting this Friday, we have seven games in eight days, so it'll be a good test for our team before heading in to Big Ten play. It's always good to get a bunch of games in a row like this because there is a lot of time to work on things that might need to be fixed before we get into the rugged Big Ten schedule.
On another note, the installation of turf at Illinois Field is just about complete. The workers needed a few more dry days to put the finishing touches on it. So that means just as soon as it gets a little warmer, we can move practices outside. The field is looking great, and I know our guys can't wait to try it out. You can see updated photos in the photo gallery on the baseball homepage of fightingillini.com.
That's it for now. I'll have at least one update from Bradenton, so keep an eye out for that.
