Champaign, Ill. - Illinois basketball great Nick Weatherspoon died on Friday in his hometown of Canton, Ohio at the age of 58.
Weatherspoon was a three-year letterwinner for the Illini from 1971-73. Nicknamed "Spoon," he finished his tenure as Illinois' career scoring leader with 1,481 career points, now ranking 10th. His career averages of 20.9 points per game and 11.4 rebounds per game have stood as Illini school records for the past 35 years.
A two-time Illinois MVP, Weatherspoon was a first-team All-American by the Helms Foundation and first-team All-Big Ten selection as a senior in 1973. He was named to the 20-player Illinois Basketball All-Century Team in 2005 and was one of 30 former UI players to have an honored jersey hung at the Assembly Hall on Sept. 13.
