University of Illinois cheerleading coach Stephanie Record announced the 2012-13 team following two days of tryouts in April and fall tryouts in September. The squad, which supports UI intercollegiate athletics and serves as ambassadors at university functions and community events, consists of 34 cheerleaders - 13 males and 21 females. Three female stunt groups were added to next year's team to supplement the 22 member co-ed team. Fall tryouts were held to select 6 additional male cheerleaders to complete the team.
The team attended UCA camp in August and placed 1st in Cheer and 4th place in Fight Song among the eight Big Ten Cheerleading Teams also in attendance. Coach Record was impressed with the team's performance, especially given that nearly half of the team who attended were first year members.
