CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- The Illinois baseball team will host "Lou Boudreau Day" Friday, May 5 at Illinois Field 25 years after his uniform No. 5 was retired. The Illini will wear a patch to commemorate Boudreau's induction into the Illinois Athletics Hall of Fame, a pregame ceremony will take place with members of his family, and 500 metallic Boudreau baseball cards will be given away.
Illinois retired the baseball jersey worn by Boudreau April 18, 1992, on the first "Lou Boudreau Day." No. 5, which was worn by Boudreau throughout his collegiate and professional careers, is one of three numbers retired at Illinois (Dick Butkus, Red Grange).
Boudreau was announced as one of 28 people in the inaugural Illinois Athletics Hall of Fame class Feb. 23, 2017. The official induction ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 30 at State Farm Center.
May 5 is also the annual "Bleacher Bum BBQ" at Illinois Field with free Hickory River BBQ for the first 500 fans. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT against Maryland and there will be fireworks after the game.
