Lovie Smith Press Conference Quotes

Opening statement
"When you look at the video, you have a pretty good idea of what happened in the game. We hung in there, did some good things, but didn't play well enough to win. It's on to Wisconsin. Whenever you have an opportunity to play a top-five team like this you have to be excited about that. Homecoming is always special too, and you want to play your best game. It's always about our next game, and for us we need to play our best game this week. Wisconsin does an excellent job and has great balance, averaging over 200 yards of offense passing and running the football. On the defensive side of the ball, they're a top-five scoring defense so it'll be a challenge for our guys. Injury wise, we'll hopefully get a couple more guys back that didn't play last week -- Mike Dudek, Dele Harding, Pat Nelson – guys that we need on the football field so hopefully we'll get them back."

On Cam Thomas' first game
"We thought he did some things, gave us a little boost, of course, running the football ball but he made a couple good throws too. Unfortunately, we'd like to have one [pass] back. First time out, he made some freshman mistakes but it's something to build on.

"Cam is a smart player and his preparation has always been there. Preparation for a freshman has been good, but there's a lot he hasn't seen. There's a lot of situations he still needs to be in, but it's that way with a lot of freshman."

On Bennett Williams's defense against Minnesota
"Bennett is a good football player, he can do a lot of things. He started out at free safety for us. He's a very intelligent football player and he really does get it. His strong suit has been playing the pass up until the past couple weeks. We've played him at the strong position, up into the box a little bit a more, and I think he did a good job. I thought his takeaway, that forced fumble, was pretty big."

On facing Wisconsin's offensive line and running game
"Taylor is one of the best in the country. He's a true freshman and is playing outstanding ball. It starts up front with Wisconsin's offensive line. They're big, athletic, knee-benders and play hard. It'll be a big challenge for our guys as one of the best offensive lines we've played so far. They're committed to getting in the best position to run the football. It seems like each year there's a great running back they have back there and they have that back this year too."

On using Christian DiLauro's as a run blocker
"He played his best ball last week from [tight end]. Once you try to generate a little bit more in the running game, you have an option of having a tight end who's more of a blocker, or bringing in a lineman that should have a better matchup, and that's what we've had with Christian. He did a good job in that position last week.

"Taking the next step. Cam has excellent speed, quickness and a strong arm. He would have liked to have one of those passes back; he over threw Louis Dorsey one time when we had him open. When you have a guy like that, and a defense that's going to gang up on the run and you have some one-on-one matches on the outside that you need to win, you need to throw the ball. The first step is to just go out there and take your first snap, that's a big first step. Now you've gotten the first game out of the way, it'll be a little more familiar the next time you play."

On Ricky Smalling's improvement
"What he's shown is that he can make plays. Last week we talked about getting him one-on-one situations. What we were doing at quarterback was a commitment to the run, we are going to have those one-on-one matchups on the outside, and Ricky has made those plays when we've thrown it to him."
