CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- Bren Spillane hit three home runs in the first four innings Monday and the Orange team cruised to a 16-0 win in Game 1 of the Orange and Blue World Series. The sophomore drove in six as the Orange opened its 16-run lead by the fourth inning.
Spillane hit a two-run shot in the second, a three-run homer in the third and a solo blast in the fourth. His fourth-inning home run capped a back-to-back-to-back homer spree from freshman Michael Massey, sophomore Doran Turchin, before Spillane.
Luke Shilling (2 IP, 0 H), Zack Jones (2 IP, 1 H), Sean Leland (2 IP, 2 H) and Joey Gerber (1 IP, 0 H) combined on the shutout for Orange.
The Orange and Blue resume their three-game series Friday at 4 p.m. The fall ball finale will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
