CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Lovie Smith and the Fighting Illini football team hosted their first practice of training camp Thursday. Illinois was on the practice fields next to Memorial Stadium for about 2 hours in the afternoon following meetings and work in the weight room throughout the morning.
"Summer workouts couldn't have gone any better," said Smith, who is in his first year as head coach. "We've gotten bigger, stronger, faster, all of that. Now, all of that leads up to having a great training camp."

Even Illinois AD Josh Whitman got in on the action of the first day. Following the team's workout, the former Illini tight end addressed the team in the post-practice huddle then jumped on the field to show what he has left.

The Fighting Illini continue practice Friday at 2:30 p.m. All 16 practices of training camp are free and open to the public.
