The NCAA on Thursday approved a medical hardship waiver for Fighting Illini point guard Tracy Abrams (Chicago/Mount Carmel H.S.), granting him a sixth year of eligibility for the 2016-17 season.
Abrams missed all of last season after suffering a torn left Achilles tendon in July. That was the second straight missed year of competition for Abrams, who suffered a torn ACL in his right knee in September 2014.
Abrams last competed during the 2013-14 season. He ranked second on the team in scoring that year as a junior, averaging 10.7 points while also leading the team in assists (3.2 apg).
"I am so proud of the perseverance and determination Tracy has displayed through his injuries," Illinois head coach John Groce said. "We are looking forward to having him back on the court this season, setting the tone for our team with his leadership, toughness and competitive drive. There is no one more deserving of having a healthy and successful senior year than Tracy Abrams."
A four-time team captain, Abrams has earned two degrees from the University of Illinois, a bachelor's in communication and a master's in recreation, sport and tourism.
