NCAA Release | 2016 Bracket | Competition Order
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The NCAA announced Monday the participating teams selected to the six NCAA regional sites and the Illinois women's gymnastics team was selected at the Salt Lake City Regional. The Fighting Illini received their 13th straight regional invite. The Salt Lake City Regional is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. CT on Saturday, April 2.
"For over the last decade, this team has earned an NCAA regional berth and this year continues that history. As a team and coaching staff, we are excited about participating in the Salt Lake City Regional," head coach Kim Landrus said. "It will be a great competition with several highly ranked teams. Despite all the obstacles we have had to overcome this year, I am confident for the next two weeks the team will work on all the little things that will prepare them to compete up to their potential. It's definitely a privilege for them to go and represent Illinois in the postseason."
No. 5 Utah, who will host the regional, received the top seed. No. 8 UCLA received the No. 2 seed, while No. 17 Washington is the last seeded team in the regional. Southern Utah and Utah State will also compete alongside the Illini in Salt Lake City.
Six teams, five all-around competitors (who are not on a qualifying team) and one individual event specialist per event [who has a minimum Regional Qualifying Score (RQS) of 9.4] were named to each of the six predetermined host sites: Athens, Georgia, Iowa City, Iowa, Ann Arbor, Michigan, Minneapolis, Minnesota, Tuscaloosa, Alabama and Salt Lake City, Utah. Each regional is made up of three seeded teams that are ranked amongst the top-18 in the nation, followed by the No. 19-36 squads that fill in the remaining three spots.
The top two teams and the top two all-around competitors (who are not on an advancing team) from each regional will receive an automatic berth to the national championships in Fort Worth, Texas, April 15-16, hosted by Texas Woman's University and the Knight Eady Sports Group. The top two teams from the Iowa City, Salt Lake City and Tuscaloosa regionals will compete in one of the semifinals, and the top two teams from the Minneapolis, Ann Arbor and Athens regionals will compete in the other semifinal.
In addition, the event winners at each regional site will advance to the national championships (in that event only) if they are not part of a qualifying team or an all-around qualifier.
