Lewis Joins Illini

Deauville, France – Illinois head coach John Groce announced Friday that graduate transfer Khalid Lewis will join the Fighting Illini program after signing a tender of financial aid.

Lewis is a 6-3 point guard who averaged 6.0 points, 2.0 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.0 steals last season at La Salle. He appeared in all 33 games, starting 18, and scored in double figures five times, led by a season-high 17 points against Villanova on 7-of-13 shooting. Lewis had seven games with four or more assists, highlighted by a career-best nine assists versus Davidson in the Atlantic-10 Tournament. The Trenton, New Jersey native ranked second on the Explorers in both assists and steals on the season.

"We are very fortunate to add a player as talented as Khalid Lewis this close to the start of the season," Groce said. "He is an outstanding young man who will make an impact on our team with his ability to play point, handle the ball, score, make plays for others and defend.  His experience is also an invaluable asset. We are excited to welcome him to our program and have him on campus in time for the start of classes on Aug. 24."
