Toronto, Ontario – Incoming freshman Jaelyne Kirkpatrick was selected as a member of the Canada Basketball Women's U19 World Championship team on Friday, as announced by Canada Basketball. Kirkpatrick is one of 12 on the team, coached by Rich Chambers, Head Coach at Terry Fox Secondary School.
"We are so excited for Jaelyne to represent Canada and play for their national team," head coach Matt Bollant said. "She is a quality point guard that works hard and makes everyone around her better."
Kirkpatrick is the second Illini to represent her home country at the World Championships this year. Sophomore Chatrice White is also overseas with USA Basketball. Not only that, but the soon-to-be freshman will represent her home country for the third time as she previously competed in the 2014 FIBA U17 World Championships and the 2013 FIBA Americas U16 Championship.
According to Canada Basketball, the team was selected throughout the year in a series of identification camps and recommendations from the Provincial/Territorial Service Organizations. Canada is currently ranked 4th worldwide in the FIBA Women's age-group rankings.
Kirkpatrick and the team will head to Spain this week for an exhibition tournament before heading to the 2015 FIBA World Championships in Russia. At the World Championships, Team Canada is in Group C, where they will compete against Mali, France and Belgium.
