Illini preparing for visit to Purdue

Illinois (4-4, 1-3 Big Ten) takes on Purdue (2-6, 1-3 Big Ten) Nov. 7 at 11 am CT on Big Ten Network.

Opening statement:
"Well, we watched the tape and it was just as bad as what we saw on Saturday. We just gotta move on. I think that's the first game that we really did not play up to - or close - to our capabilities. It was a lot of mismatches out there and we just gotta move on. It's just one of those things. We didn't play well so I got to go out there and I've got to make sure I'm positive with our players, got to be enthusiastic. It's a tough time in the year and when I say that there's a lot of things going on in terms of classes, eating right, sleeping and being physically ready. That's the big emphasis there; making sure we're taking care of our bodies and being ready to go for the Purdue team after their big win against Nebraska. We have to go out there and we've just got to be ready. I think [Tim] Clary, injury wise; I think he may be out with the leg. Hopefully we can get him back but I'm not sure that's going to happen. Our tight ends were down, two didn't actually suit up, so we'll have to just keep finding ways and that's all you can do. For me to be negative, for me to browbeat them, makes no sense at all. I'm just going to call it a little blip on the radar there; we've just got to go out there and get this thing done. We'll have a lot of passion going out to practice today."

On Josh Ferguson and Henry Enyenihi:
"Josh will go through practice today, see how he really feels. I think by Wednesday we'll have a pretty good idea of where he's at. By the way, Henry [Enyenihi] is out too. It all depends on how he's [Ferguson] feeling and whether he can go out there and help us out. Henry, on the second play, got a sprain in his knee."

On freshman running back Ke'Shawn Vaughn:
"I thought he played really well against Wisconsin and this game here he didn't play as well. I think we just keep on adding more and more responsibility to him. The pass protection; I thought he was outstanding, one of the best I've seen. This week he was not very good. You don't know what goes on in the mind of a true freshman. Like I said you're playing in front of 2-3,000 people then you walk into a stadium and there's 90-something thousand people. That's a lot of pressure on that kid to go out there and perform. But I give the kid a lot of credit."

On making adjustments to the offense:
"There's so many guys out there, we didn't win one matchup in the wide receiver corps. Somebody's got to win. We've just got to keep working. The problem is that when you get into those four-wide sets all the time, you get to defence those a little bit better. You're just trying to find ways and Saturday we didn't find them. We've got all week here to figure it all out."

On the upcoming game against Purdue:
"From what I read and what I hear every game we have is a must-win or a signature-win. We just go play. It's a trophy game. I think we make a little bit of emphasis on that. I think our kids just have to understand the little things that have to go into it. I'm a big believer in preparing yourself physically. I've got to find the edge that's out there to get us over the hump."
