Harkins named head football athletic trainer
Toby Harkins joined the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics staff as Illinois' head football athletic trainer in January 2013.
Harkins grew up in Simpsonville, S.C., and completed his education at Erskine College, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in sports management. He also attended Furman University, obtaining a Master of Arts in health and exercise science. He is a member of the National Athletic Trainers' Association.
Prior to working at Illinois, Harkins served as associate head athletic trainer-football from 2010-12 at Marshall University. Before his stint at Marshall, he served as the head athletic trainer and assistant director of athletics at Charleston Southern University from 2005-10. During his tenure at CSU, his staff was awarded with the CSU Outstanding Team Award and SCATA College & University Athletic Training Staff of the Year. Prior to CSU, he held the same position at Erskine College from 1998-05. During his tenure at Erskine he also was an assistant professor in the Athletic Training Education Program teaching such courses as Therapeutic Modalities, Kinesiology, Nutrition, Medical Aspects, Prevention and Care of Athletic Injuries and Introduction to Athletic Training.
Harkins has published four case studies, spoken at multiple professional symposiums, and presently holds certifications as an Athletic Trainer and American Heart Association Professional Rescuer. He has also served as the chair for the South Carolina Athletic Trainers' Association (SCATA) Scholarship Committee and Secretary/ Treasurer of the Association.
Toby is married to Kelly Ramsdell Harkins, who is also a Certified Athletic Trainer. They have a son, Sully, and a daughter, Paisley.
