Illinois athletes named Academic All-Big Ten

Dec. 6, 2006

A total of 32 Illinois athletes from fall sports have been named Academic All-Big Ten. To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, student-athletes must be letterwinners in at least their second academic year at their institution and carry a career grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better. Illinois athletes honored include five athletes from men's cross country, four from women's cross country, seven from football, 10 from women's soccer, and six from volleyball.

The 10 soccer players honored included Second Team All-American Ella Masar and Third Team All-American Emily Zurrer from the Illini Sweet 16 team. Big Ten tackles leader J Leman and fellow Academic All-District selections Ryan McDonald and Rashard Mendenhall made the grade from football. All-Region selections Maggie Carroll and Cassie Hunt (2005 Big Ten champion) and NCAA qualifiers Jason Bill (2006) and Dan Stock (2005) highlighted women's and men's cross country. From volleyball, Lizzie Bazzetta, who ranked sixth in the nation in assists, made the list as did Kayani Turner, who was among the top 15 nationally in kills per game through much of the season until an injury slowed her down.
